While the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has made notable progress in promoting gender equality and empowering women across its ten Member States, gender gaps continue to persist in various areas, such as labor force participation, political representation, leadership, education in STEM, access to digital tools, and protection from gender-based violence. Moreover, new and emerging challenges—like the climate crisis, digital divide, public health emergencies, and economic shocks—disproportionately affect women and girls, particularly those from marginalized and vulnerable groups.
Despite the existence of regional frameworks and mechanisms, ASEAN currently lacks a centralized institution dedicated solely to the advancement of gender equality and women-s empowerment.
