I. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION

On May 9, 2019, San Juan Mushroom Growers Association (SJMGA), was established and registered to DOLE. Its members were composed of small farm owners and unemployed residents of San Juan, grouped to produce and sell fresh oyster mushrooms and fruiting bags as source of income. From their initial capital shares, they were able to construct their own growing houses made out of cogon, bamboo and sawali. What started as a modest initiative sprouted into the San Juan Mushroom Growers Association, which later became the Laur Farmers Agriculture Cooperative (LAFACO). The cooperative was registered at the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) on 27 March 2023 with registration number CN201713383. With 51 active members today, LAFACO is a thriving cooperative that has turned fungi into fortune.
