RATIONALE/BACKGROUND
THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS NATIONALLY CELEBRATED AS “COOPERATIVE MONTH” IN THE PHILIPPINES. ACROSS THE COUNTRY, COOPERATIVES MARK THIS SIGNIFICANT OCCASION BY RECOGNIZING THE VITAL ROLE AND SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE COOPERATIVE SECTOR TO THE NATION-S SOCIO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
THE CELEBRATION OF COOPERATIVE MONTH IN THE PHILIPPINES HAS HISTORICAL ROOTS. IN 1982, THEN PRESIDENT FERDINAND E. MARCOS ISSUED PROCLAMATION NO. 2238, DECLARING OCTOBER 16 TO NOVEMBER 15 OF EVERY YEAR AS COOPERATIVE MONTH. THIS WAS LATER SUPERSEDED BY PROCLAMATION NO. 493, ISSUED IN 2003 BY THEN PRESIDENT GLORIA MACAPAGAL ARROYO, WHICH FORMALLY DECLARED THE ENTIRE MONTH OF OCTOBER, BEGINNING IN 2004 AND EVERY YEAR THEREAFTER, AS NATIONAL COOPERATIVE MONTH.
