I. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
Region I, particularly the Province of La Union, is poised to further strengthen its standing on
the global surfing stage as it hosts two major World Surf League (WSL) events in January
2026: the 2025 WSL World Junior Championships (11-18 January 2026) and the first-ever
WSL International Longboard Qualifying Series (20-26 January 2026). The staging of these
back-to-back international competitions underscores La Union-s emergence as a premier
surfing destination in the Asia-Pacific region and reflects the Philippines- expanding role
within the global surfing ecosystem. The WSL World Junior Championships will feature the world-s leading 20-and-under surfers, comprising 24 men and 24 women who qualify from seven WSL regions
worldwide—Australia/Oceania, Asia, Africa, Europe, Hawaii/Tahiti Nui, North America, and
