BACKGROUND

For many developed and developing countries, the tourism sector is a major source of employment, government revenue and foreign exchange earnings. However, the COVID-19 pandemic had brought international travel to an abrupt halt and significantly impacted the tourism industry. As a result, international tourism has been almost totally suspended and domestic tourism curtailed by lockdown imposed in many countries.

In the Philippines, the imposition of travel restrictions, lockdown and quarantine measures across the country to contain the spread of the virus had resulted to the decline in tourism. According to UNWTO, 100 percent of global destinations introduced travel restrictions. As a consequence, the hospitality sector incurred substantial losses, closure of establishments and retrenchment of employees.

Encouraging news on the vaccine is expected to speed-up the recovery of the tourism industry. However, it will remain in the survival mode until widespread vaccination program is achieved in the country.
