TheFisheries and Coastal Resiliency (FishCORE) Project is a significant initiativeaimed at enhancing the sustainable management of fisheries and coastalresources in the Philippines. The project is designed to support the Governmentof the Philippines (GOP) in establishing effective fisheries management systemsthat ensure the sustainable utilization of coastal and marine resources. Itfocuses on Fisheries Management Areas (FMA) 6 and 9, which are critical regionsfor the country's fisheries sector. These areas are characterized by richmarine biodiversity, including coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems, which arevital for both ecological balance and the livelihoods of local communities.The World Bank is providing technical assistance to thegovernment through the FishCORE Project by providing a foundational frameworkfor enhancing nature-based tourism in FMAs 6 and 9. By improving the managementof marine and coastal resources, the project creates opportunities forsustainable tourism development that leverages the natural beauty andbiodiversity of these areas. This aligns with the broader goal of promotingecotourism as a means of providing alternative livelihoods for local communitieswhile preserving the environment. The technical assistance is expected toresult in the enhanced understanding of the linkages between nature-basedtourism and ecosystem management. It will also provide practical guidelines forsustainable tourism development that benefits local communities, particularlywomen and youth and contribute to increased capacity and engagement of womenand youth in the tourism sector through targeted training and marketingstrategies.
