The Philippines Fisheries and Coastal ResiliencyProject (FISHCORE, P174137), implemented by the Department of Agriculture -Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and financed by the WorldBank, aims to improve the management of targeted fisheries resources andenhance the value of fisheries production in Fisheries Management Areas (FMA) 6and 9. One of the key components of the project is to improve themanagement of fisheries and aquaculture resources through science-based andecosystem-oriented approaches. This includes the development of comprehensiveplanning frameworks that support the revitalization of AUU fishponds. Theseareas, often left idle or degraded, present significant opportunities fornature-based solutions such as mangrove restoration, sustainable aquaculture,and salt farming. The assessment of these options is critical to ensuring thatland-use decisions are informed by both ecological and socio-economicconsiderations. The project also aims to diversify and strengthen the livelihoodsof coastal communities through sustainable aquaculture, nature-based solutions,and enterprise development.It is in this context that the World Bank is providingtechnical assistance to the DA-BFAR to assess the current status of the abandoned, undeveloped, and underutilized fishponds (AUUF) in FMA 6 and 9 and propose viable alternatives that are bothenvironmentally sustainable and socio-economically beneficial. Theassessment is designed to inform both policy reforms and investmentdecisions under the FISHCORE Project, transforming AUUF from symbolsof degradation into platforms for innovation and resilience and reinforcing thePhilippines- commitment to a sustainable and inclusive blue economy.The primary objective of the consultancyassignment is to conduct a comprehensive environmental and socio-economicassessment of AUU fishponds in FMA 6 and 9.
